Description

This is an image of a print of a hand coloured engraving by James Sowerby (1757-1822), based on drawing nominally by John White but probably by the convict artist Thomas Watling. It appeared as Tab. XVI in James Edward Smith's 1793 A Specimen of the Botany of New Holland. The plant depicted was then known as Mimosa hispidula, but is now known as Acacia hispidula.

The accompanying text explains the figure thus:

1. Back of a magnified flower. 2. A stamen. 3,3, Two pods, copied from a drawing down at Port Jackson. 4. A stipula magnified.
