Summary

Description

Erosion of Proterozoic redbed evaporitic rocks throws iron stain into Mala River sediments. Photo taken during an aerial ferry between Pond Inlet and Arctic Bay, flying due west through a glacially carved valley and shooting through the helicopter's front bubble window.

Glaciers still occupy some the higher ground on the Borden Peninsula. The waters of larger drainages are derived from winter snowpack, permafrost and glacial melt.

The wide-ranging Inuit now settled into Pond Inlet and Arctic Bay travel widely during winter along these valleys. Every major feature, places of good hunting or fishing and campsites throughout a long-occupied Arctic has an Inuit name. Canada`s cartographers simply haven`t caught up.
