Title
Medieval horseshoe
Description
English: A complete wrought iron horseshoe of later medieval date. It has a rounded outer edge and an inner profile resembling a pointed arch. There is fairly clear evidence for seven nail holes, arranged three-four, although there might have been four each side (eight in total). The holes are rectangular and taper in profile. Two nails survive in situ. At the heel end any calkins present have been lost. However, this artefact generally survives well. It has a maximum web width of c. 37mm, and a minimum of c. 16mm at the heel. The internal gap at the heel measures 59.75mm. This 'later medieval' form can be found illustrated in Clark (1986, 3; fig. 8). This example is a relatively large one.
