of April we saw on the horizon the blueoutline of the Mandara Mountains. A kind of thrushwas singing in a thorn bush, its song bearing someresemblance to that of our blackbird. At Kolofata, one days march from Mora, we weremet by a troop of horsemen sent out by the sultanto welcome us, and bearing gifts of eggs, honey, andhuge baskets of dates. A few timid natives approachedus from the mountains and begged us not to visit theirvillages, as in that case their wives and children wouldcertainly throw themselves over a precipice. Ilaughed and slapped them on the back, saying: My good duffers, we are not as dangerous as allthat!
