Notes

Album with leather covered cardboard covers, 148 cardboard leaves holding 69 albumen silver print photographs on one side of leaf only. Individual titles and official photographer stamped below image. Title embossed on front cover with seal of the City of Paris in gilt ink ; title also on spine. Label inside front cover reads: Presented to the Public Library &c Victoria on the eighth day of April 1881 by the Government of France. Hand inscribed note on first page of album upper left: Presented April 8th 1881 [illegible]. Photographs various sizes 38 x 27 cm. and smaller.
Album was designed to show the use of photography in the solving of crimes and disasters. Gift of the French Government possibly following the International Exhibition of 1880.

Official photographer's stamp on each page lower left, some images dated 1876 and 1880. One photographer identified: Hippolyte-Auguste Collard.
