Description

Sketch of the pinnace "Virginia", first ship built in the any North American, English colony. The "Virginia" was built in 1607-1608 at the short lived Popham Colony which was situated near the mouth of the Sagadahoc River. The map of Fort St. George (Popham Colony) in Southern Maine was drawn by John Hunt in 1607. Fort St. George had 15 structures and nine guns (the largest a falcon) with ditches and ramparts. Apparently, considered a worthy espionage target by Spain, the Spanish ambassador to London, Pedro de Zuniga obtained Hunt's map and presented it to King Philip III of Spain. The map was not 'discovered' in the Spanish Archives until 1888.

Notice small drawing of the pinnace "Virginia" outside the Fort's walls in the Sagadahoc River. This enlargement of a very small section of the Hunt Map has been edited to bring out as much detail as possible.
