Summary

Description
English: This is an artistic reconstruction of an extinct species: Gallirallus astolfoi, or Astolfo's rail. It was commissioned by the researchers at Te Papa who first described and named this species.

The species was described based on a subfossil bone found at Tangarutu Cave in Rapa Iti, French Polynesia. This rail was in all likelihood flightless and became extinct after human settlement on Rapa Iti.

The name of the species honors the fictional character Astolfo, one of Charlemagne's paladins in the works that compose the Matter of France. In the epic poem Orlando Furioso (Ludovico Ariosto, 1516), the sorceress Alcina traps Astolfo on a remote island.
