Summary

Description
English: British iron copy of a German bronze medal about the sinking of the RMS Lusitania in 1915.

The inscription reads:

Keine Bannware!

Der Grossdampfer
Lusitania
Durch Ein Deutsches
Tauchboot Versenkt

5 May 1915

Which roughly translates as "No Contraband! The large steamer Lusitania sunk by a German submarine 5 May 1915". The reverse shows a skeleton in the ticket window ("Fahrkarten Ausgabe") of the Cunard Line in New York. One of the passengers standing in line is reading a newspaper with a title mentioning the U-Boat danger. Across the top is the text "Geschäft über Alles" (business above everything).

The 500 original medals by German designer Karl Goetz were cast in August 1915 with the date "5. May 1915", two days before the actual sinking. British propaganda took advantage of this error, spreading about 250,000 cheap iron copies with the date "5 May 1915". Goetz then issued a corrected version, with "7. May 1915"
