Notes This poignant depiction of Christ on the Cross, which seamlessly blends extreme pictorial refinement with a heightened sense of pathos, is a unique example of Lucas Cranach the Elder's rendition of the theme on such an intimate scale. The picture is little-known as it has remained unpublished since its inclusion in a 1959 London auction. Despite this, the painting's full attribution to Lucas Cranach the Elder has never been challenged and was recently confirmed by Dr. Werner Schade and Dr. Dieter Koepplin, on the basis of photographs (written communication, 18 March 2013). This picture can be dated to circa 1530-1535 on stylistic grounds and is the only Crucifixion securely attributed to Cranach the Elder to focus on the lone figure of Christ, without the usual broader rendition of Calvary. Only two other panels of this dramatic composition are known - one attributed to his studio (Dublin, The National Gallery of Ireland) and another to his son Lucas Cranach the Younger (on parchment; Berlin, private collection). For an artist known to have produced numerous replicas of his own work, this fact alone makes this Crucifixion an absolute rarity. Cranach fills the picture frame with the suffering body of the crucified Christ, thus enhancing the poignancy of the subject. The artist has discarded all of the narrative elements and numerous other figures that usually populate his depictions of Calvary, such as in the busy Crucifixion from circa 1510-1515 (Frankfurt, Städel-Museum).
