Summary
DescriptionLooking W down Auburndale Ave at Lakeview Rd - Glenville Cleveland Ohio.jpg |
English: Standing on the northwest corner of the intersection of Auburndale Avenue and E. 124th Street and looking west-southwest in the Glenville neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio, where a part of the "Glenville shootout" occurred on July 23-24, 1968.
In 1968, single-family homes would have stood on the empty lots to the left. To the center-left is 12314 Auburndale Avenue. This house is not original to the site; it was built in the 1980s or 1990s, after the original structure present in 1968 was torn down. 12314 Auburndale Avenue, the home of Ahmed Evans, stood just behind the hedgerow. Beyond it would have been the Lakeview Tavern. At the beginning of the gun battle, an unmarked Cleveland Police Department (CPD) surveillance vehicle with two white plainclothes officers in it was parked at the intersection of Moulton Avenue (about 75 feet to the north [right] of the intersection in the background.) Another unmarked CPD surveillance vehicle was parked at the intersection of E. 124th Street and Aurburndale Avenue, just in front of where the photographer is standing. A civilian tow truck was attempting to pick up an abandoned automobile on Beulah Avenue (about 200 feet north of Moulton Avenue, and about a block and a half west). Patrolmen Kenneth Gibbons and Willard Wolff were the first marked CPD vehicle on the scene, arriving at the intersection of Lakeview and Auburndale at 8:30 PM. Gibbons says they observed a plainclothes police officer grappling with a young African American male in the front yard of 12312 Auburndale. As they exited their vehicle to assist, a rifle bullet struck the engine of their vehicle. The car exploded, killing Wolff and severely injuring Gibbons. The site of the explosion is just past the hedges. Lt. Leroy C. Jones and his partner arrived at the scene driving south on E. 124th Street at about 8:40 PM. They parked and Jones ran around the corner onto Auburndale Avenue. Heavy gunfire rang out, and Jones fell dead in the middle of the block at 8:45 PM, lying on the sidewalk on the north side of the street (the site is visible in this photograph). Patrolmen Angelo Santa Maria and Steve Sopko approached the scene from the east on Auburndale Avenue about the time Jones died. Santa Maria asked for a civilian volunteer to drive a car along Auburndale, providing him with cover so he could retrieve Jones. Twenty-two-year-old filing clerk James E. Chapman agreed to help. But the car could not get close enough, so the men got out of the car and tried to retrieve Jones. Santa Maria was shot in the back at 9:00 PM. Chapman was shot in the head about the same time that Santa Maria was shot, and died instantly. The site of his death is in the middle of the street near 12314 Auburndale. The Glenville shootout sparked rioting on July 23 which lasted until July 27. More than 2,100 Ohio Army National Guardsmen had to be called in to quell the rioting. |
