Description
English: Portrait of Lieutenant (later Colonel) Walter Fane (1828–1885), Fane’s Horse (later 19th Regiment, Bengal, Lancers).

Lieutenant Fane of the Madras Native Infantry raised an irregular cavalry unit for service in the Second China in 1860. The recruits were taken from regiments being disbanded in the aftermath of the Indian Mutiny (1857–1859). Fane’s new regiment largely consisted of Sikhs, Pathans and Punjabi Moslems, as caste restrictions prevented many Hindus from serving overseas. Fane’s unit took part in the capture of the Taku Forts during the Second China War (1859–1860) and, on returning to India in 1860, it became the 19th Bengal Cavalry (Lancers).]
