A lake effect snow squall (snowsquall) roughly 6 kilometers away drops heavy snow over the communities of Newmarket, Aurora and Stouffville. Lake effect squalls are noted for their persistence and linear banding, this particular squall is a dominant single banded snow squall producing snowfall rates in excess of 7cm/hr and producing blinding visibilities on highways 400 and the 404.
