Pozostawał on pod szczególną opieką panujących; przywileje nadawali mu Bolesław Wstydliwy, Władysław Łokietek, Stefan Batory i Jan Kazimierz. Kościół pw. Najświętszej Marii Panny i św. Wojciecha wzniesiono przed 1238 r. --- Benedictine Church and Abbey in Staniątki Not far from Niepołomice lies the village of Staniątki, where – according to legend – St Adalbert stopped in 996 on his way to the court of Bolesław Chrobry. Staniątki, which belonged to the Gryfita clan, developed throughout the 12th and 13th centuries. In 1228, the Voivode of Kraków, Klemens Gryfita Klimontowic, and his brothers founded and generously endowed the Benedictine abbey in Staniątki. The abbey remained under special protection of the kings, enjoying privileges granted by Bolesław Wstydliwy, Ladislaus the Elbow-High (Władysław Łokietek), Stephen Báthory (Stefan Batory) and John Casimir (Jan Kazimierz). The Church of the Holiest Virgin and of St Adalbert was constructed before 1238. It was a oneaisle, brick church, turned into a three-aisle hall by the end of the 13th century. Narrow side aisles were separated from the nave with pillars, upon which the new vaulted ceiling was placed. In this form, with only minor changes, the church has survived to this day. Important changes introduced in the Baroque era included fitting late-Baroque furnishings and covering the walls with polychromy. The murals were rendered by Andrzej Radwański in 1760 as a dowry for his daughter Martyna upon her entering the abbey. In the late 19th century, the outside walls were covered with red plaster, which imitates brickwork. Adjoining the church is the abbey, also founded in 1228 and consecrated in 1238. The original buildings were almost completely destroyed in the course of several fires throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. During the 1640s restoration carried out by the abbess Anna Cecylia Trzcińska, a rectangular abbey building around the cross-ribbed vaulted cloister – standing there to this day – was constructed. For centuries, the Abbey in Staniątki accumulated many valuable works of art. Among the most ancient are two Gothic Madonnas seated on their thrones (14th c.) and a late- -Gothic statue of the Sorrowful Christ. The abbey boasts an extensive collection of religious art and other objects, including liturgical vestments and utensils, statues and paintings, as well as a highly impressive library. In the chapel south of the nave, a particularly revered image of Our Lady of Sorrows can be seen. (<a href="http://www.dnidziedzictwa.pl/" rel="noreferrer nofollow">www.dnidziedzictwa.pl</a>) |
