DescriptionJulien's Patent battery tram, Henley Beach, 9 January 1889 (SLSA B-5468).jpg
English: A vehicle almost identical to those operated by Adelaide horse tram companies, with 9 men on the upper deck and 8 in the foreground. On the front of the tram is a sign, "Julien's Patent Electric Traction – Duncan & Fraser car builders Adelaide [and] Melbourne". The occasion was a trial run by the Hindmarsh and Henley Beach Tramway Company of this battery powered vehicle to consider its potential to be introduced to save the costs associated with operating with horses. The tram was provided by the Julien Electric Traction and Lighting Company of Australia.
The image originates in a low-resolution download available free of charge from the State Library of South Australia website (see “Source”). The library's web page states that a higher-resolution image (size 32 MB) is available for purchase from them. Before uploading to Wikimedia Commons I improved some exposure, contrast and other values; removed some blemishes, dust and chemical marks; and removed background flare introduced by the photographer. The image with original flaws is available from the SLSA website cited above.
