Η λίμνη απέχει 9χλμ. από τα Χανιά και κατασκευάστηκε για να τροφοδοτήσει το υδραγωγείο και το υδροηλεκτρικό εργοστάσιο της περιοχής, το οποίο, πλέον, δε λειτουργεί. Έχει συνολική επιφάνεια 450 στρεμμάτων και αποτελεί έναν σημαντικό υδροβιότοπο για την περιοχή.
