English: Engraving of the painting The Fiery Cross by John Lamont Brodie, the President of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts. Illustration for The Illustrated London News, 25 July 1863. Volume: 43 , Issue: 1214. page 17. The painting illustrates the old Scottish custom of summoning clansmen to war with a burning cross, and may have been inspired by a scene from Walter Scott's The Lady of the Lake in which such a cross is carried over Loch Katrine. reference
