English: Hydrogen embrittlement of medium carbon heat treated (hardened and tempered) steels often, but not always, results in unexpected intergranular cracks. This is because hydrogen tends to accumulate in grain boundaries if it can't find its way (by diffusion) to more comfortable positions in the microstructure of the material. The presence of the hydrogen in the grain boundaries may weaken the grain boundaries. High hardness or residual stresses increase the chances of hydrogen embrittlement in steels.
