I K Sega (born Frank Brown, Jr., June 1, 1989) is an American rapper, vocalist and lyricist, composer and record producer, actor, and entrepreneur. He specializes in various music genres, including hip-hop, Rap, R&B, soul, alternative, experimental, pop, country, horrorcore, and mastering synthesizers, piano, keyboards, and drums.

Early life and education

[edit]

Sega was born with fetal distress to Frank Brown Sr. and Brenda Y. Brown in Winchester, Tennessee. He has been influenced by music since childhood. However, his grandfather's death and last words in 2002 invoked his interest in poetry, inspiring him to pursue a music career.

He attended Franklin County High School and was enrolled at High Tech Institute, now Daymar College, until May 2009. He graduated with honors and earned his Associate degree in Massage Therapy in Nashville, Tennessee.

Career

[edit]

Sega began under the alias Yung G.a.g.e, Glimpse At Gifted Excellency, during the Myspace era, 2005-2006, and upon uploading his first rap song "Hit Me Up" to Three 6 Mafia's Late Night Tip, he would gain the attention of local producer Ed Pryor before changing his name to Aika Sega, Love song Stories told for generations. Sega began releasing via BMI singles, building his image and started recording his debut R&B album, Redemption, produced by Pryor, in the fall of 2008-2009.[1] He released the album on his live debut performance in Las Vegas, Nevada, in April 2010.[2] The Herald-Chronicle covered it in Winchester, TN. After the launch of his debut album, he began touring independently and performed at Brain Sick Nation Tour (2009), Twisted Insane, while working on his second album, the sequel to Redemption, PsyKosiS. He began branching out into underground music taking interest in the alternative and experimental hip-hop genres for inspiration. As he formerly studied Psychology, he underwent a self-induced experiment of mind exploration and sleepless nights to analyze the disorder psychosis. In 2012 he released his single and music video titled "Walking in the Shadows" ft. Lo Key[3] from his second album before its release in 2014.[4]

After making an appearance and performing at Strictly for the Wicked (2016), controversy began with his audio engineers, partners, and several labels Sega was affiliated with which led to hiatus from 2017-2019. Refocusing on his release, he launched his third album, Inconceivable, on December 31, 2019, a self-produced instrumental album to conclude the trilogy.[5]

In 2020, Sega pursued mentorship under the tutelage of multi-platinum Grammy award-winning record producer, Wyshmaster in Beat Production and Recording Arts Technology and had a lead role in Rittz's Twin Lakes, directed by Ed Pryor.[6] and He later changed his name to I K Sega to avoid mispronunciation and give new meaning to his identity.

During an interview with Hip Hop Streets in 2023 I K Sega revealed he is in the studio working on his fourth studio album.[7]

Artistry

[edit]

Sega is known primarily for the incorporation of acronyms into his name, song titles, and albums, his vocal range and crooning abilities, witty lyricism, and his live stage performances with the inclusion of various contact lenses used for his imagery.

His reasons for the theme and imagery of one's eyes and being attracted to the eyes is as he states: "By having a theme centered and focused on a part of the body people naturally look at or attempt to avoid you receive certain signals from your audience based on where they are looking and their body language because, the eyes, they're the windows to the seat of the soul, they tell you everything about a person, and this is how you keep a good conversation going, you do so by having direct and unbreaking eye contact". Thus alluding to my use of contact lenses because we all a different views or windows."

Influences

[edit]

Growing up Sega listened to music across cultures and eras but he was heavily influenced to begin poetry and R&B by Ginuwine, his dance and entertaining abilities come from Michael Jackson and Chris Brown, and his lyrical style and storytelling ability come from rappers: Tupac, Outkast, Kanye West, Jay Z, Eminem, Three 6 Mafia, T-Pain, T.I, & Tech N9ne. He embodies both sides of the yin/yang spectrum. As an R&B artist he delivers messages of love, peace, harmony, family, and the greater good but also having experienced "the streets" and incarceration, he frequently turns to Hip hop to fight oppression faced in black communities thus evoking the dark and mysterious side of the unknown, "game of money", and wisdom and truth. By combining these elements with an unapologetic hood mentality while maintaining a reserved or calculated and critical thinker attitude that contradicts his normally mellow personality we get infinite kinetic sacred energy generating attraction. He's been compared to emcees Lil Wayne and Hopsin but his stage presence makes him best described as an all-around entertainer. "I seek to be the best and only me there'll ever be."

Lyrical and musical style

[edit]

Lyrically, Sega's Southern rapper style would be best described as mellow and informative but also entrancing, metaphorical, storytelling, and packed with complex and thought-provoking lyricism accompanied by harmonized vocalization that blends with melodic R&B and Southern beats. With his lyrics and the metaphors he uses being focused on delivering and leaving impactful lasting impressions and messages that paint vivid imagery into the minds he captivates. Daily and personal life experiences, the supernatural realm and spiritual experiences, financial literacy, and the experiences of others are the main sources of inspiration for his music. Sega is noted for his flow and the raw energy of his presence during live performances.

Personal life

[edit]

Brown is of African American and Native American descent.

Brown holds an associate degree in Massage Therapy, is a black belt in taekwondo and small circle jujitsu, ran track & field in high school, and is a self-taught cook.

[edit]

In the early hours of July 19, 2019, Sega was arrested and charged with felony vandalism, aggravated assault, possession of an ounce of marijuana, and resisting arrest after former Winchester Police officer Tristan Delacruz found him in his car at Tim's Ford Lake and public park. His initial bail was set at one hundred thousand dollars. Sega made bond several days after the incident and was in an ongoing case until January 2021. During the trial, prosecutors dropped his felony charges later over the lack of evidence.
