The stately figure at the right, presumably governor Sir Thomas Gates, embodies the dignity and virtue of Anglo-Saxon culture.
A gracious Pocahontas is obliged to recount the behavior of Argall, at the left.
The artist casts [Samuel] Argall as a foil against more virtuous representatives of two great civilizations.

John Robinson evidently owned a copy of Sandys bookpublished in 1605, one of those snatched from the flamesand now in Pilgrim Hall, Plymouth. Its ownership appearsto be guaranteed by the Leyden pastors oddly dot-deco-rated autograph, penned twice on its outer page.* Thediscovery of the Leyden document by Dr. Eekhof, in 1920,cast doubts on the genuineness of this reputed autograph.Historians for two hundred and fifty years had shownsignatures accepted as those of John Robinson and Myles * Today proved a spurious signature.
