th amendment to the Con-stitution of the United States with the follow-ing addition: Resolved, That loyalty shall direct and con-trol the destinies of this nation. Resolved, That the soldiers of the unionwho have saved this nation from destructionby armed traitors, shall, in the future, as inthe past, have our hearty co-operation and un-faltering support, and that we are deeply sen-sible to the fact that the people of this repub-lic can never fully discharge the debt of grati-tude which they owe to the union soldiers andsailors whose self-sacrificing patriotism andblood have preserved constitutional libertyupon this continent. Mr. Taffe in accepting the nomination de-clared that he was unswervingly opposed tothe Johnson policy. Turner M. Marquett wasnominated for delegate to Congress on thefirst ballot, receiving 39 votes against 2? forOliver P. Mason and 1 for John Taffe. Mr.Marquett had been chosen member of Con-gress at the provisional state election held in 370 HISTORY OF NEBRASKA

While, therefore, the delegateship wasintrinsically lesser, yet it seemed at this timethe surer of the two offices; and for Mar-quett the change might be a reduction or apromotion according to ones political fore-cast. John Gillespie and Augustus Kotmtzcwere again nominated by acclamation for theoffices of auditor and treasurer respectively,and Robert S. Knox for librarian, also byacclamation. The call for the democratic territorial con-vention to be held at Plattsmouth, on the 11thof September, invited all to participate whofavored the reconstruction policy of the presi-dent and complete restoration of the states totheir rightful position in the union at theearliest practicable moment, and are opposedto the disunion policy of Congres
