NEWSTEAD ABBEY. cealed, but the further end of the lake, frontingthe abbey, was visible—the brightest object inthe landscape. The hills of Annesley, bleakand barren, lay in dark blue tone beneath aheavy thunder-cloud, and the avenue of treeswas discernible, which leads through the domainof the Chaworths to the ancient hall, with allits sad associations and regrets. Sadder stillwere the thoughts with Avhich we turned to theextreme right of the landscape and discerned,through the gray mist of the falling rain, thevillage and tower of Hucknall, where lie themortal remains of the pilgrim poet, brought fromthe far distant marshes of Missolonghi, to restin the chancel of one of the least picturesque ofour country churches. As the storm was coming up quickly over thehills, we hastened across the park.
