Summary
DescriptionGeorge W. Carter House, Buffalo, New York - 20220109.jpg |
English: The George W. Carter House, 354 Fargo Avenue, Buffalo, New York, January 2022. A two-and-a-half-story brick residence on whose façade predominate round-arched windows - notably the trio on the second floor above the hip-roofed porch, as well as the ersatz Palladian window above with its rugged stone sill and lintel - the c. 1889 Carter House is notable as among the most latterly built examples of Romanesque Revival residential architecture that survive in Buffalo, a style mastered by architect Herbert Burdett whilst training under the master himself, Henry Hobson Richardson. Textured brick is another eye-catching feature of the design, seen in the form of latticework fronting the porch, under the gable of the front dormer, and the textured brick course that serves as a window head topping off the aforementioned second-floor triple window. The builder and longtime resident of the house was George W. Carter (1844-1930), a prominent construction contractor who lived in the house until his death. His widow Ida remained there for another twelve years before moving to a smaller residence on Park Street. |
