DescriptionFrankton Tornado, August 1948 (20737069362).jpg
The deadliest tornado in New Zealand’s history hit the Hamilton suburb of Frankton on 25 August 1948. Three people were killed and eighty injured. The tornado destroyed or badly damaged 150 houses and caused more than £1 million of damage – approximately $70 million in today’s money.
This photograph is one of thirteen showing tornado damage in Hamilton. A caption on the back of the photo states: ‘Lake Rd. House shifted approx. 20ft + turned round about 80°.’
The photos were taken for the Ministry of Work’s Housing Division. They form part of a series of 1055 state housing photographs dating from 1937-1952, which document the New Zealand Government's role in the construction of housing.
