Description
English: Plan of the projected Fort São João Baptista de Ajudá (Ouidah, Benin), drawn at the end of 1721 by Joseph de Torres (José Torres) who built the fort in November 1721. He placed the fort under the protection of Our Lady of Deliverance (Nossa Senhora do Livramento) and named it Cesarea in honour the the viceroy of Brazil, Vasco Fernandez Cesar, who had authorized the creation of the fort. The fort soon became known by the name of the saint for whom its chapel was dedicated: Saint John the Baptist (São João Baptista).
