Summary

Description
English: Picture of the former Allegheny County Jail, which is connected to the Allegheny County Courthouse by the Bridge of Sighs and is located at Ross Street and Fifth Avenue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on March 20, 2010. The courthouse and jail were designed by Henry Hobson Richardson. In 1884, the construction of the buildings was begun by the Norcross Brothers, Richardson's construction firm of choice. The jail portion of the complex was completed in 1886, the year of Richardson's death, and the entire courthouse was finished in 1886 by Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, Richardson's successor firm. Architectural style: Richardsonian Romanesque. Additions to the jail were added by Frederick J. Osterling from 1903 to 1905. The courthouse and the jail are listed together as a National Historic Landmark, and on the National Register of Historic Places, but the courthouse and jail are listed separately on the List of Pittsburgh Landmarks recognized by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation (PHLF). The former jail now houses the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas Family Division.
