按赖特提供的文字解释，这幅画面表现的是清文宗道光皇帝每年元旦举行的大阅兵。“大阅”是清代的阅兵仪式。按礼典不是每年举行，而是“三岁一举”。大阅兵的日子不是每年元旦，而是当年的秋季，故又称“秋阅”。天聪七年，皇太极在关外举行了清朝第一次大阅兵。占领北京后，为激励满人的征服意志，顺治13年定每三年“大阅”一次。兵事繁忙的时候，阅兵突破三年一次。 19世纪的欧洲人，已经看到天朝大国的虚弱。赖特在行文中写到：描有龙、虎、猛兽形状的八旗旗号和制服看起来威猛，而实际上这支军队毫无战斗力。北京城里的八旗军平时根本没有任务，天下太平，家居京城的满族士兵们做生意、抽大烟、听大戏、养鹦鹉、生一大群孩子，都听任自便。北京朝廷已经剩下了一副空架子，被英国人一眼看穿! |
