English: This portrait is assumed to be posthumous, based on the same source as the less elaborate painting of the same title, attributed to Emmanuel de Critz. It has also been attributed to Cornelis de Neve. The surround, incorporating trophies of fruit and vegetables, with flowers and shells, alludes to Tradescant's interests in horticulture and conchology. The surround was probably painted by another artist, perhaps Alexander Marshal (c.1610–1682), who painted flowers for the Tradescants.
