DescriptionEichmann Aerobat I -NX17638- (27294090208).jpg
c/n 1
Built approximately 1937.
This reverse-delta flying wing type is widely and incorrectly reported as being the 1985 Aerobat III ‘N17638’ which was a pusher, nosewheel design that crashed on its maiden flight in July 1997, killing designer and pilot Ellis Eichmann.
This is, in fact, the earlier Aerobat I which first flew in 1942 and was also registered as NX17638, hence the confusion. On display in front of it (and further adding to the confusion!) is the rudder of the 1947 Aerobat B ‘NX64638’.
This remarkable survivor of an intriguing design is on display at the Texas Air Museum, Stinson Field, 1234 99th Street, San Antonio, Texas, 78214, United States.
