BBC sci-fi series 'Doctor Who' was first broadcast on BBC One at 5.15pm on Saturday November 23, 1963. It was created as an educational family show to fit between the football results and evening entertainment programmes. Doctor Who was the brainchild of Canadian TV producer and BBC Head of Drama, Sydney Newman. The fiftieth anniversary special episode of the long-running series is 'The Day of the Doctor', which will be screened simultaneously in 76 countries on 23 November 2013 and will be the world's biggest drama simulcast.
This image of Pertwee as Dr Who is from the New Zealand Post Archives series, which was part of the Post Office Museum and Archives. There is a large amount of photographic and audio visual material in this series, which were intended for publicity, internal training, and to show NZ Post history. This photograph is likely to have been commissioned for publicity purposes in conjunction with Telecom.
