Description |
Painting by Don Eddy, Oracle Bones (acrylic on canvas, 75" x 74", 1996). The image illustrates a later stage and cycle of work in Don Eddy's career beginning in the 1990s: his icon-like, metaphysical paintings which shifted from everyday imagery to imagery of flora and fauna, landscape, figures, architecture and art history that alluded to timelessness and shifting conditions and combined aspects of Christianity, Buddhism and Taoism. Multi-panel paintings such as this one drawing on medieval altarpiece formats—a new strategy for Eddy—explored the mystery of being through poetic juxtapositions encouraging contemplation, open-ended personal interpretation and active viewer participation. This work and similar works have been publicly exhibited in prominent venues in the U.S. and internationally, discussed in major art journals and daily press publications, and acquired by museums. |

Purpose of use |
The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a later stage and cycle of work in Don Eddy's career beginning in the 1990s and continuing post-2000: his icon-like, metaphysical paintings which replaced the everyday imagery of earlier work which imagery that seemingly spanned the universe, from microscopic to cosmic, natural to man-made. The new paintings explored the mystery of being through images such as flowing water, rainbows, light and immaterial energy that alluded to both timelessness and shifting conditions, and combined aspects of Christianity, Buddhism and Taoism. Eddy employed a multi-panel strategy in this work as a vehicle for poetic juxtapositions encouraging contemplation; the images function like textual signifiers in which meaning does not reside "in" the image, but rather, is generated between and amongst images in relation. Because the article is about an artist and his work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to visualize this key later phase in his art, which were exhibited in major venues, discussed by major critics and in books, and acquired by museums. Eddy's work of this type and this work in particular is discussed in the article and by prominent critics cited in the article. |
