Summary
DescriptionDerry St Columb's Cathedral North Vestibule Cecil Frances Alexander Memorial Window 2013 09 17.jpg |
St Columb's Cathedral, Derry, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland English: Window in the north vestibule in memory of the poet and hymn-writer Cecil Frances Alexander who died on 12 October 1895 in Derry. She was the wife of William Alexander, bishop of Derry. The three lights refer to three hymns written by her: The left light refers to “Once in Royal David's City” with the scene of the Nativity; the centre light refers to “There is a green hill far away” with Jesus Christ after he rose from the dead in front of the hill where he was crucified; the right light refers to “The Golden Gates Are Lifted Up” with the scene of the holy city, new Jerusalem, in heaven with open gates. The window was created by Powell and Sons and unveiled by the Right Rev. Bishop Montgomery, at a service held on 21 March 1913, along with a memorial window for her husband who died in 1911. (See Irish Times, 22 March 1913, p. 10; J. Godfrey F. Day and Henry E. Patton: The Cathedrals of the Church of Ireland, p. 36–37.) |
