Summary

Description
English: Confocal image of a dissected, fixed, and stained fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) retina. Cyan - nuclei (DAPI), magenta - ATF4 (dsRed-ATF4), yellow - endoplasmic reticulum marker (CNX99A). The yellow structures (false color) are photoreceptors. The colocalization that can be seen between the magenta and yellow colors suggests that a stress response has been activated in the photoreceptor cells. This may initiate pathways leading to cellular degeneration. The lens structures to the left of the image are the top of ommatidia, helping focus incoming light into the photoreceptors.
