English: “The central photo was taken by Laura Rubin a long time ago, and the ones on the far right were taken even longer ago: Jimmy McCourt in Central Park the summer before we met at Yale in '64 + me getting on a boat in Amsterdam in '65. I just found that poster on top left (under my bed) of John Wayne's book AMERICA WHY I LOVE HER, which is the first book I did as a picture editor for Michael Korda at S&S; converting Wayne's album of songs into a book took me to the Library of Congress for the first time. This bookcase holds all of my nearly 150 picture sections. The picture top right is a page from a magazine of an ad by Mapplethorpe; I used it in Morrisroe's bio of him. The framed poem lower right is one I wrote to my Dad when I went away to college telling him how much I loved him. The book under the central photo is in Chinese with my first acknowledgment in Chinese from the author, Gisela, my dear friend & colleague. This is a very potent image for me.” Vincent Virga
