Summary

Description

Cortinarius rubrobasalis M.M. Moser & E. Horak

Image location: Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina

Only found one group of these cool pinkish-rosy corts; in leaves near wood; CAP 2-4 cm, shiny silky-striate, dry, smooth; STIPE 50-60 × 8-10 mm, straight, paler than cap but with distinctly reddish-rosy tinge, slightly bulbous base; FLESH dingy red-brown, unchanging; GILLS cinnamon-tan, slightly notched; SPORES rusty brown (visible near top of stipe — but not clear from photo); VEIL thin cortina; OTHER no odor detected.

(number 0226.6, page 165)

Used references: The agaric is found on soil under several species of Nothofagus which are suspected of being its mycorrhizal host plant. According to the list of records, C. rubrobasalis has a wide ecological range but prefers, however, localities near the timberline or Fuegian habitats exposed to rather extreme climatic conditions. Pileus up to 6 cm diam., hemispherical or convex to obtusely umbonate, red-brown to dark, margin covered with conspicuous red-orange fibrils, dry. Lamellae yellow-brown turning rust brown. Stipe -7 x -1.5 cm, fusoid (rarely cylindric or clavate), basal portion densely covered with-orange fibrils from universal veil, dry. Flesh brownish. Odor and taste not distinctive. (Gamundi, I. & E. Horak, 1995. “Fungi of the Andean-Patagonian forests.” Buenos Aires: Vazquez Mazzini Editores, pg. 97)
