DescriptionCorning Museum of Glass - 20220412 - 10 - Venetian glass beads for trade in West Africa.jpg
English: This display at the Corning Museum of Glass's "35 Centuries of Glass" gallery comprises a collection of glass beads found in West Africa - principally Ghana and Nigeria - that were produced by Venetian artisans in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Beginning in the early 16th century, these pieces were popularly used by merchant mariners not only as a means of barter with the local populations (who typically used them as jewellery and for decorative purposes) but also as ballast in the ships themselves. As seen during an April 2022 visit to the museum.
