Summary

Description

The Newcastle Commercial Exchange memorial, originally in the old arched opening of what is now the Central Arcade in Newcastle. It was a memorial to the fallen of the First World War, and was unveiled on 10 August 1920. The mason work was by Robert Beall's monumental masonry company. The sculpture and the bronze work was done by John Reid, and William Curry of Birtley. The bronze work was by Rene Bowman, and J.W. Singer & Sons. The whole monument was designed by architects Mauchlen and Weightman.

The monument is now missing, and it is possible that the structure was dismantled and that the bronze plaque with the names was perhaps kept in an unknown location. A list of some of the 153 names from the memorial, taken from contemporary newspaper reports, is here. There are more pictures from the same page of the newspaper, of the unveiling ceremony here.
