Description

Traversing an Open Interior by Charlotte Schulz (charcoal and pastel on paper, 47" x 39" x 1", 2017–8). The image represents a key later period and body of work in Charlotte Schulz 's career beginning in 2011, when she began to explore crinkled textures, and particularly, torn, irregular edges and shapes to a greater degree in her charcoal drawings, often producing works whose irregular, continent-like shapes and mash-ups of deconstructed, varied terrains and settings suggested maps. Works such as this drawing, from her "Groundlessness" (2017–8) series, which portray archaeological, geological and life forms seen from above suggesting timeless societal, environmental and internal processes taking place in a divided world, particularly show this new direction in her work.

Purpose of use

The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a key later period and body of work in Charlotte Schulz 's career beginning in 2011: her single-sheet charcoal drawings, which explore to a greater degree crinkled textures, and particularly, torn, irregular edges and shapes. These drawings address historic upheavals like the Arab Spring through puzzling juxtapositions of desolate landscapes, transparent buildings, and incongruous elements and feature continent-like shapes and mash-ups of varied terrains and settings, like maps. These vignettes, across her "The Impossibility of Keeping Borders" (2011–2), "Incursion of Otherness" (2013–4), "Territory of Significance" (2015–6) and "Groundlessness" (2017–8, seen here) series, portray archaeological, geological and life forms seen from above suggesting timeless societal, environmental and internal processes taking place in a divided world. Because the article is about an artist and her work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to visualize a key later phase in her art, which brought continuing recognition from art journals, daily press publications, and museum exhibitions. Schulz's work of this type and this work in particular is discussed in the article and by prominent critics cited in the article.

Replaceable?

There is no free equivalent of this or any other of this series by Charlotte Schulz, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image.
