Originally dependent on the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, but was declared autocephalous in 1833, and was recognized as such by the Patriarch of Constantinople in 1850. The Christian communities of Greece were, in unity with Rome, the ecclesiastical province of Illyria. From the year 730 the province came under the jurisdiction of the Patriarch of Constantinople who dragged the Schism the year 1054. In 1829, when the war of liberation against the Turks, the church was separated from the jurisdiction of Constantinople and was recognized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The King of Greece, according to the Russian model, was the supreme ruler of the Holy Synod. They have no Patriarchate itself. In 1923 the archbishop Papadopoulos Synodical constitution reformed by the Holy Synod came to be chaired by the Archbishop of Athens. It is the primus inter pares. A tendency to keep the organization democrática.Durante the Second World War and the subsequent Communist persecution, many priests were killed and many churches were destroyed. This weakening of the forces was seized by communist propaganda and cults like the Jehovah's Witnesses and Sacred Preachers. The Orthodox Church of Greece has been slowly recovering from the prostration. It works closely with the State. A number of associations working for religious education through media and schools. Each state has its own apostolic organizations. Also important is the effort deployed by charities and the formation of competent priests. Relations with the ecumenical movement were developed with interest, but the understanding of thought and internal conditions of the Catholic Church was weak. The Church of Greece was always a deep aversion to Patriarado expansionist view of Moscow..
