DescriptionCastle Village and retaining wall from Hudson River Greenway 1 crop.jpg
Castle Village is a cooperative apartment complex located on Cabrini Boulevard in the Hudson Heights neighborhood of Washington Heights, Manhattan, New York City. It was built in 1938-39 on the site of a castle which had been the residence of real estate developer Charles Paterno, and was designed by George F. Pelham, Jr., the son of George F. Pelham, who designed the nearby Hudson View Gardens cooperative. Castle Garden was one of the earliest apartment towers to use reinforced concrete construction. (Source: AIA Guide to NYC (5th edition)) On May 12, 2005, a 75-foot retaining wall in front of the complex collapsed, blocking the Henry Hudson Parkway. It was replaced at the cost of over $24 million. In this image, the new wall is on the right, and the old wall on the left.
