Description
English: Cartoon from the eastern province Observer, Port Elizabeth, by Charles J Barber. Cartoon on the British project to confederate southern Africa and regional reactions to this. Themed on the three witches of Macbeth. Depicted are the two main press outlets - the Argus of the western cape represented by Patrick McLoughlin on the right and the Grahamstown Journal of the eastern cape represented by Robert Godlonton on the left (The highly litigious Godlonton is shown faceless). In between them is the Cape's anti-confederation Prime Minister John Molteno. Dated 19 December 1878.
