Summary

Description
English: This photo was taken while Chicago, Burlington and Quincy steam locomotives 4963 and 5632 were sitting inside a scrapyard just south of Chicago. Notice how No. 5632 is detached from its tender and coupled behind it.

The story behind this goes that both of these locomotives, which were acquired from the CB&Q by steam preservationist Richard Jensen, were involved in a collection of equipment Jensen was forced to remove from the Chicago and Western Indiana roundhouse on such short notice. The C&WI subsequently had the collection sold to the Erman Howell Division of the Luria Brothers Scrap Company, the owner of the yard shown here. While being pushed into the yard, engine No. 5632 derailed on a sharp curve. In 1972, the scrapyard crews decided to relocate No. 5632, but because it was in a derailed state, it was dismantled for scrap. This decision led to a lengthly legal battle between Jensen and the C&WI.

No. 4963 was more fortunate, as in 1991, the same year Jensen died, it was acquired by the Illinois Railway Museum, and it has been displayed there ever since.
