And you can make out all the steam gauges on the instrument panel... because Southwest bought retro cockpits for its 737-300s, so the same pilots could fly -200 or -300, whatever was available. A real glass cockpit was invented for the -400 and available as an option for the -300 and -500...
Ok, but its not as simple as worshiping sunk training costs. SWA determined its pilots could do a better job, not just different, better, if they had Heads Up Display screens in front of the pilot, so here it is. Better situational awareness for sure, possibly better results in marginal weather.
