Description
English: Al-Bagawat, also spelt as El-Bagawat, is an ancient Christian cemetery, one of the oldest in the world, which functioned at the Kharga Oasis in southern-central Egypt from the 3rd to the 7th century AD. It is one of the earliest and best preserved Christian cemeteries in the ancient world.
العربية: البجوات جبانة مسيحية يرجه تاريخها من القرن الثانى الميلادى إلى القرن السابع االميلادى، ت قع خلف معبد هيبس، وكلمة "جبوات" هي نطق أهل الوادي لكلمة "قبوات" جمع "قبو" وذلك إشارة لأن كل مقابر الجبانة تعلوها قباب، وهي مبنية من الطوب اللبن، وتتمثل أهميتها البالغة في أنها ترجع لأوائل العصر المسيحي حيث فر أقباط مصر بدينهم خوفًا من الاضطهاد الروماني للمسيحية، واستقروا في الصحراء بعيدًا عن أيدي الأباطرة الرومان.
