Photograph of the Art in Action exhibit at the Golden Gate International Exposition in the summer of 1940. Photographer Peter Stackpole climbed Diego Rivera's scaffolding to take this shot of "The Pit"--the area where artists were being viewed by Exposition attendees. The mosaic of Herman Volz is in view on the opposite wall.
