Angkor (Cambodia/Southeast Asia)

Deutsch: Die Region von Angkor in Kambodscha. Satellitenaufnahme der NASA, ergänzt um eine Übersichtskarte mit einigen der bedeutendsten Tempelanlagen und Strukturen in Angkor sowie der Stadt Siem Reap, der Landebahn des Flughafens, dem gleichnamigen Fluß und einem Stück des Tonle Sap Sees.

Begriffserklärung zu einigen Namensbestandteilen in Khmer:

Angkor: Stadt; von Sanskrit: Nagara
Banteay: Zitadelle, ein Tempel mit Umgrenzungsmauer
Baray: Wasserreservoir; nicht gegraben, sondern durch Dämme angelegt
Phnom: Hügel, kleiner Berg
Prasat: Turm (eines Tempels); von Sanskrit: prasada
Preah: heilig; von Sanskrit: brah
Siem Reap: entspricht Niederlage Siams (der Siamesen/Thai) und bezieht sich auf einen Krieg zwischen den Khmer und dem Thai-Königreich Ayutthaya im 17. Jahrhundert
Srah: Wasserreservoir, gegraben, nicht aufgestaut, kleiner als ein Baray
Srei: Frau/en
Thom: groß, großartig, herausragend
