Summary

Description
English: André Vellozo

André Gustavo Vellozo Luz (born May 29, 1969) is a Brazilian businessman and leading advocate for data ownership and monetization. He is the founder and CEO of DrumWave Inc., a company dedicated to building the infrastructure and tools for the emerging data economy [Wiki link]. He also founded the International Data Reserve in Geneva, Switzerland, to develop standards, valuation metrics and policies to fortify data ownership rights. Vellozo is known for his vision and passion for the data economy and has multiple patents issued or registered with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office). He was elected one of the world’s top 100 influential Latin Americans in 2022 by Bloomberg Línea. [1]

ENTREPENEURIAL CAREER AND VISION Born in Brasília [Wiki link], Vellozo engaged in several businesses during the 2000s including farming, publishing, special effects and international trade. In the early 2010s, he moved to New York where he became involved in the big data/fintech ecosystems and began advocating for data ownership rights. At the time, he predicted that by 2022, the planet would be at a turning point – a paradigm shift from software to data – that would begin a cycle of positive social impact. He named this shift ‘The Eden’s Megacycle’ [2], describing how it would promote data ownership and reduce data asymmetry. [3]

Moving to Palo Alto in 2014, Vellozo and his collaborators Alberto Blumenstein and Santiago Ortiz began working with businesses and governments to solve mission-critical problems using the organization’s data. In 2015, as their solutions and unique UX for data gained traction, Vellozo incorporated DrumWave to house the patents, trademarks, product and code that were being generated. Today the company serves a number of clients across industries providing a range of data products and positioning them to participate in the data economy. [4] Since 2015, Vellozo has been prompting companies and governments to enforce data ownership rights. He advocates for consumers, arguing that data privacy rights shall mature into data ownership rights and underscoring the idea that data autonomy is not a philosophical or legal issue but a monetary one. [5].

PERSONAL LIFE André was born in Brasília [Wiki link], son of Robinson de Oliveira Luz and Beatriz Helena Vellozo Luz. Both his mother and his father came from activist families with diverse and sometimes competing points of view. He lived in several cities in Brazil during his childhood and teenage years, moving from Brasília to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. André is related on his mother’s side to lawyer Thiers Velozo, cousin of the award-winning Brazilian singer-songwriter Caetano Veloso [Wiki link].
