English: Photograph of Ambassador Oswaldo Aranha of Brazil. The diplomat holds a letter written by the President of Brazil, typed on official stationary with an embossed stamp seen on the left hand corner. Letter begins: "Gabinete Do President Da Republica. Rio de Janiero, 13 de Agusto de 1935, Meu caro Oswaldo: Escrevo-te no interval da tua excursao so Oeste, sobre a gual esparo as impresses, apos o regresso..." Loosely translated: "Office of the President. Rio de Janeiro, 13 August 1935. My dear Oswaldo: I write to you in the interval of your excursion to the West, on which I wish for impressions, after the return..." Remaining legible text expresses the President's concerns about external restrictions on trade, and notes the "pressure of economic nationalism" that produces monetary imbalances and general instability. Aranha was likely photographed at the Ambassador Hotel, where he was reported to have stayed while in Los Angeles. |
