Un fondo oscuro y una mesa gris es el escenario donde se expone el motivo único del cuadro: un cordero merino de entre ocho y doce meses de vida. Se encuentra todavía vivo, tumbado y con las patas ligadas con un cordel, en una actitud inequívocamente sacrificial, que curiosamente recuerda famosas imágenes de santos martirizados, como la conmovedora escultura de Santa Cecilia de Stefano Maderno en la basílica de Santa Cecilia en Roma. El pintor ha utilizado su inigualable capacidad para reproducir las texturas, una luz muy calculada y dirigida que crea amplios espacios de sombras y una técnica minuciosa, para concentrar la atención en el animal que parece asumir con mansedumbre su destino fatal (Texto extractado de Portús, J.: El Prado en el Ermitage, Museo Nacional del Prado, 2011, pp. 130-131). |
