Summary

Description 81-91 Church Street, known as the Howard Opera House, on the corner of Bank Street in the Church Street Marketplace of downtown Burlington, Vermont was built in 1878 and was designed for John Purple Howard by Stephen Decatur Hatch in the High Victorian Italianate style with Renaissance Revival elements. The Opera House, which had a capacity of 1,165 and a stage that measured 74x30 feet, closed in 1904 due to the rising cost of insurance after a disastrous theatre fire in Chicago, and the building was converted to commercial use. Several department stores were located in the building at different times in its history. The building is a contributing property to the Church Street Historic District. (Source: [1])
