The green Suhuara cactus, much in evidence in Arizona, is the shoulder sleeve insignia of the 103d Division, the unit's former assignment.

Background
The coat of arms was originally approved for the 409th Regiment Infantry, Organized Reserves on 1925-08-20.
It was amended to withdraw "Organized Reserves" from the designation and to delete the Organized Reserves' crest from the coat of arms for the 409th Infantry Regiment on 1959-07-29.
On 1970-06-25 it was amended to reinstate the crest of the U.S. Army Reserve and revise the symbolism for 409th Infantry Regiment.
The coat of arms was redesignated for the 409th Regiment on 1999-06-17.
